Diagnostic LaparoscopyProcedure Description:
Under general anesthesia, the abdomen is inflated with gas and a scope inserted through the umbilicus to observe the pelvic and abdominal organs. Problems can be addressed as they are encountered.
What To Expect:
Done under general anesthesia, the procedure lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Small incisions are made in the umbilicus and lower abdomen to allow passage of instruments. The incisions will be moderately uncomfortable and normal activity is usually resumed within 1-2 weeks. Pain medication will be provided.
Preprocedure:
Nothing to eat after midnight the night before surgery. Labs will be drawn either a couple of days before or the day of surgery to screen for potential problems. This is an outpatient procedure, you will in most cases go home the same day. You will need to have someone bring you to and take you home from the hospital.
Postprocedure:
The small incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures and steri-strips. The bandaids may be removed the day after surgery and you may shower. The strips will stay on for 10-14 days. You may eat whatever you want, and your activity is whatever you are comfortable with. You will be seen in the office 10 days to 6 weeks after surgery.
